Sports science support

Athletes can access a range of performance support services and programmes delivered by our sports scientists. Support is available to external sports bodies on both a team and individual basis, provided on campus or off-site and tailored to suit the club, athlete or coaches’ needs.

Our services

Strength and Conditioning

The MP Jackson Fitness Centre includes a dedicated strength and conditioning super centre complete with Olympic weightlifting platforms. From here, our expert instructors can deliver one-to-one and team-based sessions or alternatively run pitch and field-based sessions.

Physiological Testing

One-off testing or structured programmes can be integrated into training, developed from our state-of-the-art analytical, research and athlete assessment laboratories. The programmes can assess current training programmes and interventions, test protocols and integrate activities measuring: strength, power, speed, aerobic capacity, blood lactate assessment, anthropometrics and performance nutrition.

Notational and Performance Analysis

Working with Elite Sport Analysis, the University offers notational and performance analysis for individual athletes and team sports. Using the latest Focus software, team variables and individual technique can be assessed, tracked and monitored, providing essential feedback to both the coach and athletes. Opposition analysis and statistical outputs can also be generated.

Sports Psychology

Expert support is provided to sports scholars by Dr John Mathers, a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and a BASES Accredited Sports Psychologist. He is also the Director of Learning and Teaching in the School of Sport, lecturing on sports science topics and module co-ordinator for three sports science modules.
