In 2008, First Minister Alex Salmond designated the University of Stirling as Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence.
As you would expect from a designated national centre for sport, Stirling has world-class facilities including the National Swimming Academy and the National Tennis Centre. Within our campus, we host the sportscotland institute of sport, the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland, the Scottish FA Women's National Football Academy and the Falkirk FC Academy amongst others.
Stirling has sport at the heart of its identity and was the first Scottish university to offer sports scholarships in 1981. Former scholars include 2009 Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew and Olympic swimmer Todd Cooper.
The University was selected to govern Winning Students, Scotland's national sports scholarship programme for student athletes. Funded by the Scottish Funding Council, the scholarships provide support to talented high performance athletes studying in colleges and universities across Scotland.
At Stirling, we aim to be the catalyst for a successful sporting future for Scotland, putting Scotland's talent on a world stage by combining sport with education.
